Description

Utah's First National Park

Follow the paths where ancient native people and pioneers walked. Gaze up at massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink, and red that soar into a brilliant blue sky. Challenge your courage in a narrow slot canyon. Zion’s unique array of plants and animals will enchant you as you absorb the rich history of the past and enjoy the excitement of present day adventures

A prominent feature of the 229-square-mile (590 km2) park is Zion Canyon, which is 15 miles (24 km) long and up to half a mile (800 m) deep, cut through the reddish and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone by the North Fork of the Virgin River. The lowest elevation is 3,666 ft (1,117 m) at Coalpits Wash and the highest elevation is 8,726 ft (2,660 m) at Horse Ranch Mountain.

Zion Human History Museum

The Human History Museum is located one half mile north of the park's south entrance on the main park road, or 11 miles west from the east entrance.

Permanent exhibits display the rich human history of Zion National Park. Showcasing American Indian culture, historic pioneer settlement, and Zion's growth as a national park, the Human History Museum also illustrates the effects of water in Zion. Both creator and destroyer, water is why people have traveled through and settled in Zion. Water creates the scenery and sanctuary that makes Zion famous.

Temporary exhibits have included replicas of historic Union Pacific Railroad lodging, Civilian Conservation Corp dairies, park employee photographs, and much more.

Free 22 minute video, shown every half hour, provides excellent park overview. Rangers are available to answer questions. Books, maps, posters, and film are available in the museum bookstore.

The Zion Canyon Theatre

The Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theatre opened on May 26, 1994 to show the giant screen film Zion Canyon Treasure of the Gods. Located adjacent to Zion National Park, and the beautiful Virgin River in Springdale, Utah the Theatre Center features a six-story giant screen.

The theatre's giant screen is the largest in Utah and one of the largest in the world measuring 60 feet high and 82 feet across. Sound is delivered through an eight track digital Surround Sound system capable of 22,000 watts.

The Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theatre has 2 Christie Digital CP2000 projectors, they are set up in what is called a "Stacked Projection system" This is what allows us to show 3D films. The server is a Doremi Filmstore.

Zion Canyon IMAX in Springdale offers many interesting documentaries about the natural history of Zion Canyon and the American Southwest.

The Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theatre is the final stop for the Springdale Town Shuttle. Park visitors will get off the town shuttle and cross the river into the park, where they will catch the park shuttle at the new Transportation Center.

The Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel

Construction of the 1.1 mile Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel began in the late 1920's and was completed in 1930. At the time that the tunnel was dedicated, on July 4, 1930, it was the longest tunnel of it's type in the United States. The purpose of the building the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel (and the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway) was to create direct access to Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon from Zion National Park.
