Below you find a part of the radio collection Boris Sheikman - including other related items. My name is Boris. I've been interested in radios and audio equipment since I was a boy. Being firmly in my mid-30's I'm too young to have lived through any "golden age" except for the CD, the internet, and the DVD. It seems that I catch the tip tail end of all good things thanks to the generations before me. My father is a retired electrical engineer with a strong background in radio. We immigrated to the US from the now nonexistent USSR in the late 70s and one of the first things my father did in the US was buy a shortwave radio. I remember listening to it with him and thumbing through a World Radio handbook that listed many shortwave frequencies to listen to. We would pick one and it was my task to tune it. He eventually got a digital based tuner and it was pretty simple after that. Playing with father's radio as a young boy and even a tween encouraged me to get involved in modern electronics which led to a love of CD players, receivers, equalizers, speakers, and tape decks. It was great fun finding books from the 50's through the 70's that explained basic recording, playback, and amplification techniques. I'd compare it to what I had from the 80's and 90's and say boastfully to myself, "Well, I'm better that that now!" I started noodling around on an electric guitar as a late teenager and quickly discovered tube amps. As far as I'm concerned guitar amps must have tubes in it! I still putz around with my guitars and now I enjoy buying old amps to restore them a bit. It's great fun and I love hearing that warm nonlinear tone! Sometimes I branch back into tube radios because I find them charming. Old electronics are a piece of history. They showcase social expectations of technology of the day. Back in the days (so to speak) people had great expectations of radios and amps. Look at how nice some of the wooden enclosures are! This is not like disposable technology is today. It was intended to be beautiful! I think we can all learn something from that. Beauty! |
