Below you find a part of the radio collection Tadanobu Okabe - including other related items. When I was a Junior-high school boy, there was a nasty attic in my house, where I found a heap of magazines made from thin and coarse yellow paper on a well-used desk. They were radio magazines around 1947. In this attic used as a storeroom, there remained also a lot of dust-covered wrecked radios, parts and tools, which my father had gotten in his younger days. Through these magazines I could feel not only structure of radios, but also vivid breath of rising postwar Japan which had lost everything. Since then I have taken great interest in old radios. I assembled remained parts into a complete unit of 4 tube regenerative receiver for the first time, receiving instruction from father and brother. Thus my collection of radios started. I built my collection basically trough mending abandoned radios and TV sets. It was about 1978. Afterwards I have collected mainly Japanese radios made between 1930 and 1950 systematically. So may collection grew larger. And after 25 years of efforts, now it consists of more than 800 radios. In 2005 I could set up a small exhibition room at a resort place in Nagano Prefecture. This Japan Radio Museum has started its activities in March 2007 on virtual museum of internet. The Japanese radios after 1955 are well known, as transistor radios were widely exported on a full scale. However, concerning the radio history for 30 years before the time between the beginning of radio broadcasting in Japan are not enough understood. I would like to introduce the history of Japanese radios for 30 years from the very beginning of broadcasting through the collection of my Museum. |
