History: |
Roland Hussey Macy opened a small dry goods store at the corner of 6th Avenue and 14th Street, New York city in 1858. Despite several failures at the retail business, R H Macy & Co did slowly grow and by 1877 sales were over US $ 80,000. The business became a full scale department store wit Macy himself introducing many firsts in the retail industry. By late 1902, the company had moved to Herald Square, at the corner of 34th Street and Broadway. Following expansion in 1924, the company had over one million square feet of selling space. It had become a Public Company in 1922 and had begun regional expansion with branches and take over's. The first Macy's Christmas Parade was held in 1924. This is now known as the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Macy's began business in California with the purchase of O'Connor and Moffatt in Union Square, San Francisco in 1945. In December 1994, Federated Department Stores acquired R H Macy & Co and now known as Macy's Inc, operated nearly 600 stores, including specialty stores, in 37 US states. By 2017 there were over 700 stores as well as the Macy's.com website. There are also stores in some other countries.
Macy's first sold radios made by Clapp-Eastham, as mentioned above. In the later 1920's radios made by Freshman, RCA and Stewart Warner were sold and Emerson and RCA radios were sold in the next decade. One unsourced advertisement from 1925 has been located. Macy's also sold small transistor radios in the 1950's - 1960's using the Supre-Macy brand. These most likely were manufactured in Japan. |
