Storia: |
From 1926 they were involved in the manufacture of battery electric vehicles having purchased the British Electric Vehicles Company. This continued until after WW2. Production of "Polar Components" continued until 1990 when the Company was acquired by Jackson Brothers. The British Electric Vehicles division (BEV) was still running until the late 1980s. They manufactured mainly mining locomotives for non-gaseous mines with either battery operation or overhead catenary power. The main customers were in South America, typically Bolivia and Brazil. The BEV factory was in Kirkby on the outskirts of Liverpool.
The managing director was Major Charles Wingrove, the technical director was his brother Fred Wingrove, financial director was William Nichols and the sales director was Terry Dutton. The W&R factory at Domville Road had two other famous British companies as neighbours. One was the Meccano factory and the other was the Hornby train company. Old Swan was a vibrant manufacturing base on the outskirts of the city at the time. John Fielding was the Director of the subsidiary company "Polar Electronic Developments" based at the main W&R factory in Domville Road, Old Swan in Liverpool.
All of these companies have now ceased trading. The company folded in the late 1980s and the tuning capacitor division was bought by their long time competitor Jackson Brothers in London. |
