Summary: |
Fleetwood (brand of C&A Odlin); Wellington, New Zealand. |
History: |
Fleetwood was a well known brand in New Zealand, retailed by a long standing firm called C & A Odlin Timber & Hardware. Brothers Charles and Alf Odlin started their initial business in 1901 opening a small timber yard in Petone, Wellington.
They worked hard so their business grew and bloomed and they were public spirited, starting the first free ambulance service in Wellington in 1927. Odlins also delved into radio retailing and had the Atwater Kent licence in New Zealand from the mid 1920's.
Public broadcasting in New Zealand started in about 1922/23 with the first serious radio transmissions from Professor Robert Jack, who experimentally broadcast from the Otago University buildings during 1921. Odlins sold a number of radio brands including UK Mullard over the years and one of these lines was under their own label of "Fleetwood" which were sets manufactured by Philips. Most Fleetwood circuits are very Philips centric.
In 1986 the Odlins company was taken over by Fletchers and the name generally disappeared from commerce. However their Edwardian styled head office building in Wellington Central, after some years in neglect, was upgraded in 2005 and given a new life to house the New Zealand Stock Exchange.
