History: |
Pacific Radio Co. Ltd.; Distributors 1933-1937 L.B. Scott Ltd., South Island Distributors. Their radios were manufactured by Radio Corporation of NZ Ltd. as a “private brand” and were typically art deco styled but containing standard Radio Corp chassis. Their sets, like the Courtenay brand, used American valves. throughout. [1] The company was Registered in Wellington in June 1933 by P.P O’Brien and Doreen C. Beasley, incidentally on the same day as Courtenay Radio Ltd. [2] Around 1935 the motto “Pacific Radio - In a Sphere of its Own” appeared on adverts for radios and handbooks. [3] In January 1937 Radio Corporation of NZ Ltd. reorganised and stopped the manufacture of “private brand” radios prior to listing as a public company. The radio stock held by Pacific Radio must have been plentiful as advertising from dealers continued into early 1938. [4] Akrad Radio Corp. Ltd. (1940-1945 In late 1940 Akrad took over the Pacific brand, logo, and motto to supersede the Futura Brand. [1] G. A. Wooller Co. Ltd.; Distributors (1945-1953) In late 1945 Akrad advertised extensively the “Pacific Radio is on the market again” starting with Model 525.[7] [1] The Golden Age of Radio in the Home, |
