The firm of Cliff & Bunting was established in 1887 by Harry Cliff and Jonathan Craven Bunting for the manufacture of farm machinery. Their first manufacturing works were situated in Elizabeth Street, North, Melbourne.[1]

In 1941 they set up a division manufacturing power transformers for defence, which was named Trimax Transformers, located at 29-35 Flemington Road, North Melbourne, Victoria.[2]

In October 1949 the company had moved to a new purpose built factory at the corner of Charles Street and Williams Road, North Coburg, Victoria. Half the new factory was used for the manufacture of agricultural equipment and the other half for Trimax Transformers.[3]

Under the Trimax brand they also manufactured professional studio broadcast equipment, power supplies and test equipment which was used extensively by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the Postmaster General's Department throughout Australia.

In July 1955 they disposed of agricultural machinery section of the company and changed the name to Trimax Transformers Pty. Ltd.[4]

The L M Ericsson Telephone Company Pty. Ltd., of Melbourne (wholly owned subsidiary of the L M Ericsson Group, Sweden, purchased a majority share of Trimax Transformers in 1960.

L M Ericsson–Trimax purchased an 18 acre site in Broadmeadows for a new factory in1962.[5]
