The Company retailed radios and gramophones under their own house brand “Simolian" in 1924/25 and later from 1927, “Oceanic". [3][4] The Oceanic brand was also used with other Mick Simmons products, including the "Oceanic" tennis racquet.

Storia:

Radio History:

1924/25 - advertised the “Simolian” brand of radios and sold imported parts from the USA.

Simolian sets were designed by L. O. Kerlin who was appointed Manager of the Service Department in September 1924. Prior to this, Kerlin was Secretary for the Queensland Wireless Institute and operated one of the first radio transmitters in Brisbane.[17]

In 1925 they employed Mr. G C Finch from AWA as Manager of the Radio Department and advertised that he personally constructs and tests all sets made by Mick Simmons.[5]

1926 - They advertised “Special Receiving Sets” by arrangement with United distributors Ltd. and Burndept radios from the UK. [6][7] They also advertised a 5 valve Neutrodyne in kit form.[8]

1927 – Advertised radio accessories and Magnavox radios from the USA. [9][10]. They also became dealers for Stromberg-Carlson Australia.[11]

1927- The first Oceanic radio was advertised in August 1927. It was a re-badged, 5 valve receiver from liquidated stock of a large American radio dealer.[12]

1928 – Advertised imported, the Oceanic 5 valve, Magnavox radios and parts, Freshman Masterpiece radios, Splitdorf and Australian made Airzone radios. [12][13][14]

1929 –Advertised as dealers for;

  • Howard Radio
  • AWA Radiola
  • Stromberg Carlson
  • Atwater Kent
  • Splitdorf
  • Piece Airo
  • RCA
  • Oceanic
  • Bosch
  • Airzone
  • M.S. Radio
  • Magnavox Speaker.[15]

1930’s - After tariff protection was introduced by the Commonwealth Government in 1930 the company concentrated on selling Australian made radios. They also advertised “Mick Simmons own receiver, Oceanic” at a lower price than the equivalent AWA and Airzone radios of the period.[16]

The manufacturer of Oceanic Brand radios was probably the Zenith Radio Co. Ltd.

The radio retail arm was still active in the late 1950's. The company survives to this date as a sporting goods retailer with stores at George St. & Pitt St., Sydney.
