The company manufactured industrial electrical remote control and monitoring equipment.

Londex Ltd was founded by Mr A Ney and Dr W L Stern in 1936. Initially, the works consisted of two rooms at the back of a laundry in Sydenham. Dr Stern developed new components and solved customer problems, while Mr Ney promoted sales. By 1939 the firm had about a dozen employees, but some of the government contracts received following the outbreak of war were so large that proper premises had quickly to be found. The head office was established at 207 Anerley Road, London, along with the R&D department. The premises suffered a serious fire in January 1957. By 1964, there were several manufacturing sites, more than 400 employees, and the company exported to over 60 countries. In the 1970s the main factory was moved from Howard Road to Oakfield Road, and in 1976 a new factory was built at Penge.

First describing themselves as "Manufacturers of Relays", the company went on to make a large range of specialised electrical control equipment, such as multi-step actuators, timers, alarm annunciators, pressure and vacuum switches, marine warning beacons, electrical remote controls, photo-electric and electronic equipment, coaxial RF relays, flameproof and intrinsically safe controls, electric area-measuring machines, public lighting controllers, liquid level control systems, flow indicators, mains supply controls, electromagnetic gas valves, other gas and fluid control equipment, and even components for milking equipment and automatic apparatus for assaying drug antagonists.

In 1962 the company was acquired by Elliott Automation, which was in turn acquired in 1967 by GEC as part of the takeover of English Electric. In 1983 the GEC Londex subsidiary was acquired by Cambridge Instruments.
