Curtiss Aeroplanes and Motors, Ltd. was founded in 1915 by J.A.D. McCurdy to produce airplanes and provide pilot training for the Canadian government during WWI. The airplanes were designed by aviation pioneer Glenn H. Curtiss although the extent of his ownership in the company is unknown. Production of airplanes ceased at the end of WWI in November, 1918. Curtiss was friends with Alexander Graham Bell who in turn was friends with Emile Berliner who was the inventor of the gramophone. In early 1919 Curtiss took over a portion of the factory at 163 Dufferin St. to manufacture gramophones. A total of four models were produced, differing only in cabinet style. The company advertised heavily from around mid 1919 to just before Christmas. Production of the gramophones ended in 1920 and the company declared bankruptcy in August, 1920. |
