History:

Founding and Early Years

David Gregory Marshall founded the company in 1909 as the Brunswick Motor Car Company in Cambridge. Initially, it operated as a garage and chauffeur service, starting in a former stable in Brunswick Gardens. The business quickly succeeded, prompting a move to larger premises on King Street in 1911.

Expansion into Automotive and Aviation

In 1912, the company expanded into car sales and relocated to Jesus Lane. During World War I, Marshall's garage serviced vehicles used in the war effort, particularly ambulances. A significant boost came in 1920 when Marshall was awarded the distributorship for Austin in Cambridgeshire, following a chance meeting between David Marshall and Sir Herbert Austin during WWI.

Entry into Aviation

The company's involvement in aviation began in 1929 when David Marshall and his son Arthur established Cambridge's first aerodrome on Newmarket Road. This led to the formation of Marshall's Flying School in 1930.

World War II Contributions

Marshall played a crucial role during World War II, training over 600 RAF pilots before the Battle of Britain in 1940. By the end of the war, the company had trained more than 20,000 aircrew for the Royal Air Force.

Post-War Development

After World War II, Marshall continued to grow, focusing on aerospace and special vehicle engineering2. Marshall Aerospace became a major part of the group, engaging in aircraft maintenance, modification, and design.

Modern Era

By 2012, the Marshall Group had grown into one of Britain's largest privately owned businesses, with an annual turnover exceeding £1 billion and nearly 4,500 employees. The company has diversified its operations, including Marshall Aerospace, Marshall Land Systems, Marshall Slingsby Advanced Composites, Marshall Fleet Solutions, and Marshall Property.

Recent Developments

In 2021, Marshall announced plans to relocate its aerospace operations from Cambridge Airport to Cranfield Airport by 2027, marking a significant change in the company's long-standing presence in Cambridge.

Throughout its history, Marshall has evolved from a small chauffeur service to a diverse group of international companies, maintaining its forward-thinking spirit and problem-solving approach across various industries.[1]
