History: |
Silvertone gramophones manufactured by Sears Roebuck Co., Chicago USA were imported to New Zealand from 1924.[1] The first Silvertone radios were advertised by retailer S.E. Moe & Co. in May 1930. [2] Moe’s was an Auckland distributor and retailer had sets made by W. J. Sexton Ltd., and later by S. D. Mandeno Ltd. [4][5] From 1947 according to the late John Stokes in Golden Age of Radio in the Home, Sheffield Radio Ltd. manufactured Silvertone and Radio Specialities Ltd. took over Moe’s business but this only lasted for a few years.[5] [1] New Zealand Herald 6 Nov 1924, Page 15. |
