History:

Bond & Bond

Founded in 1875 at Silverdale by Enoch Bond for his sons Enoch, Enos, and Elon.

Originally set up to buy gum. As the diggers preferred payment by supplies, the business developed into a general store.

In 1891 the 3 partners were joined by the founder's son-in-law, John Bell, and they operated a general store at Opotiki.

With the considerable growth of the business it was decided to open a central distributing warehouse which opened in 1894 and they commenced trading as general merchants in Auckland under the name of Bond & Bell from premises in the Old Mill, Queen Street. Twelve months later it was found necessary to move to premises in Commerce Street.

In 1918 the name reverted to Bond and Bond when John Bell retired.

Mr. H. V. Coe, who entered the business in 1903 and rose to become manager, acquired part of the partnership interest in 1926. Also, at this time, Elon Bond junior, a son of the senior partner took an interest and the business was incorporated into a limited company under the title of Bond & Bond Ltd.

The company opened its first Home Appliance branch in the Dilworth Building, Queen Street, Auckland, and the second branch in Hamilton in 1936 followed by a  branch in Whangarei.

The company continued trading through into the 1960s.

The name was used again with the foundation of Bond & Bond NZ Ltd. in 1991 a subsidiary of Noel Leeming Ltd.
