Early Years
R.H. Electronic Service was established in Sheffield, England, likely in the mid-1940s. The company operated out of 93 Button Lane in Sheffield.

Radio and Electronics Business
In the late 1940s, R.H. Electronic Service was involved in selling radio and electronics components and equipment:

  • In December 1948, they advertised crystal oscillators for the RCA ET4336 transmitter and various radio components like condensers, insulators, and switches. [1]
  • Their March 1949 advertisement showed that they were selling more advanced equipment, such as panoramic adaptors, rotary beam indicators, and Hallicrafters receivers.
  • They also offered television kits and manuals for building televisions from surplus equipment. [2]

Transition to Tape Recorders
By 1950, the company had shifted focus to manufacturing tape recorders:

  • In July 1950, they advertised the "R.H. Qualtape Magnetic Tape Recorder" as a kit for home assembly. [3]
  • The company was incorporated as Electronic Service (Hallamshire), Ltd. in July 1950 to acquire the tape recorder and television manufacturing business of David Sockett. [4]

Qualtape Brand
The company continued developing its Qualtape brand of tape recorders in the early 1950s:

  • In September 1952, they announced a "sensational tape recording invention" that allowed recording from the radio or record player directly to tape. [5]
  • By April 1954, they were advertising a Qualtape recorder capable of 2 hours of recording at 1⅞ inches per second.
  • In June 1954, they were selling surplus Qualtape components like recording heads and transformers. [6]

  • The company was incorporated as Electronic Service (Hallamshire), Ltd. in July 1950 with £5,000 capital.
  • The directors were David Sockett and Ernest G. Summers.
  • The registered office remained at 93 Button Lane, Sheffield.

Final Years
