Canstar was a pioneer in the development and manufacture of tree couplers for optical fibre communications systems.

Production: 1978 -
History:

In 1977 Canstar developed fused biconic taper (FBT) optical tree coupler technology in collaboration with the Communications Research Center in Ottawa, Canada, and launched the first commercial FBT products in 1978. In 1992 the company, then owned by Canada Wire and Cable Ltd, became a division of Alcatel Canada Wire Inc.

In 1997, Canstar was acquired by FCI (Framatome Connectors International, the connectors subsidiary of Framatome Inc, of which Alcatel is the major shareholder). The couplers were then manufactured at the pre-existing plant of FCI Canada in Scarborough, Ontario, called FCI Electrical.

This manufacturer was suggested by Bruce Taylor.
