Abbreviation: gilbert
Products: Model types
Summary:

C. H. Gilbert & Co. Ltd., Arundel Street, Sheffield. Initially best known for their high quality gramophones, and later, for a few radio models. Their cabinet gramophones incorporated a bugle-shaped tone-arm, a mother-of-pearl faced soundbox, and on some later models, a small electric light mounted on the arm to illuminate the needlepoint. Portable models were also made and achieved fairly wide sales.

Founded: 1922
Closed: 1937
Production: 1922 - 1937
History:
The Gilbert company was founded by Mr. Charles Gilbert Hibbard in 1922 and Gilbert gramophones were produced between the years of 1922 and approximately 1931. During the 1920's, their gramophones were considered to be at the forefront of gramophone technology. They sometimes used proprietary parts such as Garrard motors and turntables, but other parts such as their bugle-shaped tonearm and mother-of-pearl faced sound-boxes were patented by them. Gilbert wind-up gramophone production ceased in 1931 due to the availibility of electrically operated gramophones but the company continued in business until 1937. They produced a Gilbert Gramophone/Radiogram in 1931, which was shown at the Olympia Exhibition, and later went on to produce a few radio models, such as the Gilbert A50 and A53.

This manufacturer was suggested by William J Blanchflower.
