Dear Friends,

When the russians came in Romania, in 1944, the grandfather of a friend, beying scared, buried in the garden his radio. Not so long time ago, his nephew un-buried the radio and he gave it to me as a present, in order to fix it (the nephew is pensionary) .

The radio is Blaupunkt 5GW640P and his cabinet is made of bakelit, being identically with the radio posted on Radiomuseum with the indicative 5W640P. And the electrical schematic and the tubes are from 5GW640 radio, with the cabinet made of wood and it has another design, which is also posted on RADIOMUSEUM.

Can somebody elucidate why is this contradiction of indicatives?

Thank you,

Eng. Ion CARABAS

On your model label it's clearly 5W640P a completely different Blaupunkt.

I put a link to it. It looks very much the same as yours. Though your case is broken it's possible the radio can be restored. Have you the pieces?

Using "hot melt" glue gun and Epoxy the breaks can be repaired.

Polyester filler (like car repair ) can fill holes and cracks.

clean

Coat edges with epoxy and hot melt glue gun on outside (the glue will peel off later) to hold the parts till epoxy sets. Then use the car body filler (Isopon in UK & Ireland is good) from the INSIDE with parcel tape or similar on the outside. When set the parcel tape will peel off and leave a smooth finish.

An amazing story.

Dear Michael,

Indeed, I also found the model 5W640P on Radiomuseum. It has the same cabinet as my "victim", but it functions only with lamps from ECH11 range ..........  The other post, 5GW640 without P letter, has a totally different cabinet. In the  list of Blaupunkt models doesn't appear the model 5GW640P. What could mean the P letter?

I will try to clean the radio and make it function. Regarding the cabinet, I think that I will let it be as it is in present.

It will be better that the next generations to know and not to forget what our grandfathers did, feared by the russians.

Thank you for the advices.

Best regards,

eng. Ion CARABAS

Dear Ion,

"P" means "Pressstoff" = "Moulded Plastic". In this case the cabinet is made of Bakelit. No "P" means the cabinet is made from wood. The circuit is the same of a "P"-set or non-"P"-set.

"W" = Wechselstrom = Alternating current. The set is using a transformer and vales of the "E" type 6,3 V heater. (ECH 11 etc.)

"GW" = Gleichstrom/Wechselstrom = Direct current/Alternating current. No transformer is used and the set could be used on all types of power supply. To avoid unnecessary waste of power the valves were connected in series with 100 mA heater current ("U" valves like UCH11 etc.)

The letters "W" and "GW" distinguish the different circuits, the letter "P" only distinguishes the cabinet.

Best regards

Rüdiger

Dear Wolfgang,

You are right and I would like to thank you. I felt that somewhere is a dispcrepancy and I am glad that we can correct the error.

When shall I upload 5GW640P model? Now or after I will clean it a little, because it looks deplorable.

How shall I upload a new model? I am sorry for this question, but I am 75 years old and it is a little bit difficult for me.

Best regards,

Dear Ion,

you can download just the images of the front, chassis and the name plate to the model.
Clean it a little bit so that it looks better.
You can upload the rest later, when your device is restored.

I've moved the wrong images to the correct model.

So, you can create a new model ==> RM.org start side ==> Create New Model ==>
Fill out the form with the known data.

Sincerely WB.
