Carcross, originally known as Caribou Crossing, is an unincorporated community in Yukon, Canada, on Bennett Lake and Nares Lake. It is home to the Carcross/Tagish First Nation. It is 74 km (46 mi) south-southeast by the Alaska Highway and the Klondike Highway from Whitehorse. The south end of the Tagish Road is in Carcross. Carcross is also on the White Pass and Yukon Route railway. The city is served by Carcross Airport, which has no scheduled commercial flights. The closest Canadian airport with large airline service is Whitehorse Airport, which has domestic airline service as well as flights to Europe and the United States. Description | Carcross station is a railway station in Carcross, Yukon, Canada. It serves the White Pass and Yukon Route heritage railway. The station is the northernmost terminus for passenger railway services on the line, with connecting bus services to Whitehorse, Yukon. The building was designated a national heritage railway station in 1991. The building was originally built in 1910 for the White Pass & Yukon Railway, being in service from 1910 until 1982. Service was later re-instated in 2007. White Pass & Yukon Route celebrating its return to Yukon. from White Pass and Yukon Railway: Once a hunting and fishing camp for Inland Tlingit and Tagish people, Carcross became a key stopover and supply centre during the Klondike Gold Rush. The White Pass and Yukon railway, extending from Skagway through Carcross to Whitehorse, was completed in 1900. With the completion of the railway, Carcross became a major transportation centre. The Carcross railway station is designated under the federal Railway Station Protection Act. Although Carcross still provides some highway services for the South Klondike Highway, tourism has taken over as a mainstay of the local economy. After a 25 year absence of service the White Pass & Yukon Route has provided scheduled passenger service between Carcross & Skagway since 2007 |
