Das Museum bewegt sich an den Schnittstellen zwischen Alltagskultur und Kunst, Handwerk, Design und industrieller Produktion. In Wechselausstellungen und Veranstaltungen zeigt es Gestaltung in all ihren Facetten – vom künstlerischen Objekt bis zum alltäglichen Gebrauchsgegenstand.

Seit 1999 befindet sich auch die Uhrensammlung Kellenberger im Gewerbemuseum.
