Location / Directions |
La Presta Asphalt Mine is a former asphalt mine in the Val-de-Travers region of the canton of Neuchâtel. Today the mines are no longer in operation and are partially open to the public as a museum. A dedicated train station La Presta Mines d'asphalte, located near the mine, is served by regional trains. Steam trains operated by Vapeur Val-de-Travers also occasionally serve the station. |
Description | Mine tour Your journey to the centre of the earth: visit to the asphalt mines of La Presta Put on your helmet, switch on your torch and let yourself be guided through the underground labyrinth of the asphalt mines of La Presta in Val-de-Travers. During the tour, you will learn how the miners extracted two million tonnes of a rare and valuable rock from the mountain: Asphalt. Continue your day with the Asphalt Story exhibition, where you will learn how the deposit was created and how it moved, or take your research bag and go in search of the animals in our biotope, the miners' garden! Asphalt Story: Immerse yourself in the world of asphalt production We invite you to the attic to better understand, through various experiments, where asphalt comes from and how it got to Val-de-Travers. Through a scientific, playful and interactive approach, visitors of all ages can take a journey from the infinitely large universe to the infinitely small atoms and gain a more or less in-depth understanding of what this hydrocarbon actually is and how it forms and moves through the layers of our planet. From life to asphalt, that is the wonderful story told by the Asphalt Story. The miners' garden The renaturalised miners' garden is a place of recreation open to all. With its pond and forest path, the garden offers opportunities to relax and contemplate nature in the heart of a special biotope for flora and fauna. In addition, digital and manual activities help visitors to observe and understand animal and plant communities. Practical information The miners' garden is accessible to everyone free of charge. However, to discover animals nesting in trees, hiding in the reeds or laying eggs by the pond, it is best to use the Totemi app on your tablet and the explorer bag! The researcher bag contains all the necessary tools to carry out the manual activities while the tablet ensures that you have a good internet connection. You will find the necessary material at the reception of the asphalt mines. The visit with Totemi app and explorer bag takes about 1 ½ hours and is included in the entrance ticket for the asphalt mines. |
