Description

“Fellenbergmühle” Museum of Precision Engineering

A historically significant rarity

The still-operational precision engineering workshop of the Fellenberg mill, which was set up in 1927 in the former flour mill established as early as 1797, is a relic of industrial history. The workshop nature of the premises has been preserved even after renovations were completed. The seeming clutter of machines and transmission belts creates an atmosphere for exploration that immediately draws visitors in. The “Cardan wedding ring engraving machine” developed and patented in 1931 by Johann Peter Hartfuß, the founder of this precision engineering operation in Merzig, can still be used to put initials on a ring in only a few minutes.

The energy needed to operate the machines is produced by the workshop’s own turbine, and the primary source of energy is still the Seffersbach creek. The Fellenberg mill’s precision engineering operation is an impressive example of the transition from manual to industrial production and the essential factory-type characteristics of the industrial process.

In 1997, the professional and exemplary refurbishment of the Fellenberg mill was recognized by the Saarland’s cultural heritage preservation award.
