Description

Underground museum
The underground museum is the most attractive and exciting sight at the Estonian Mining Museum, consisting of former mining gears with a total length of 1 kilometre.
During the guided tour, visitors become miners as they put on helmets and miner lights and descend to mining gears up to 8 m under the ground. They are offered a unique chance to walk in the footsteps of real miners, experience their daily work in moist and dusky conditions, which helps to understand the background and the development of oil shale mining and the functioning of the industry.

During the underground tour, guests visit miners’ various underground work places as well as the explosives storage, travel on a real underground train for miners, and get the view of various underground technical equipment and mining technology.
In addition to that, visitors can order a delicious miner’s lunch and enjoy it in the underground miner canteen.

Besides the exciting adventure under the ground, the Estonian Mining Museum offers various interesting tours both on the territory of the mining area and farther.

  • Visiting the oil shale sorting premises and the watchtower
  • Looking for fossils present in oil shale and limestone layers on the gangue hill
  • A hike or a cycling trip to and on the hiking and learning tracks in the re-cultivated areas of the Aidu quarry
  • Viewing the cross section of oil shale layers and how the “moonscape” of processed areas are re-cultivated in the Vanaküla oil shale quarry

CLOTHING
Although there are new and convenient passages in the underground museum, the visitors are kindly asked to wear casual clothes and footwear. Please note that the temperature in underground gears is +6 to +8 degrees all year round, also some water may drip from the ceiling.
In order to ensure safety and cleanliness, all visitors are equipped with a helmet and a miner’s jacket and optionally with a miner’s lamp before the tour.

EST: Allmaamuuseum
Allmaamuuseumi on Kohtla Kaevanduspark-Muuseumi ligitõmbavaim ja põnevaim atraktsiooni, mille moodustavad endised kaevanduskäigud kogupikkusega 1 kilomeeter. Ekskursiooni käigus astutakse tõeliste kaevurite kunagistes jalajälgedes ja saadakse osa nende igapäevasest tööelust rõsketes pimedates kaevanduskäikudes, mõistes seeläbi põlevkivi kaevandamise ja tööstuse toimimise tagamaid ning arengut.
