Échillais liegt im Nordwesten der historischen Provinz und Kulturlandschaft der Saintonge etwa 1,5 Kilometer südlich der Charente und nur etwa vier Kilometer südlich der Stadt Rochefort. Nach Saintes sind es etwa 33 Kilometer in südöstlicher Richtung.

Description

The first Transporter Bridge was built near Bilbao in Spain and is still used today. Worldwide less than twenty transporter bridges were built, of which 6 are currently in operation.

Rochefort-Martrou Transporter Bridge is a transporter bridge built between 1898 and 1900. It is located in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, Poitou-Charentes.
Opened: July 8, 1900
Total length: 175 m
Width: 12 m
Clearance below: 50 m

The Transporter bridge will open in the spring 2023

After four years of major renovation works, the gondola of the Pont Transbordeur cross again the river Charente. From April to october, the Pont Transbordeur allows cyclists and pedestrians to reach both banks of Rochefort and Échillais.

Maison du Transbordeur - Visitor centre

In 2003, the 'Maison du Transbordeur' (Transporter Bridge visitor centre) opened in a converted ferry boat shed, in Échillais, allowing the Transporter Bridge to become a fully-fledged tourist attraction.
