Suomussalmi ist sowohl eine Gemeinde im Nordosten Finnlands als auch der größte Ort in dieser Gemeinde.
Suomussalmi gehört zu Nordfinnland und grenzt im Osten an die russische Republik Karelien. Sie ist Teil der Landschaft Kainuu. Die Region ist sehr dünn besiedelt, nur 7862 Einwohner (Stand: 31. Dezember 2018) leben auf einer Fläche von mehr als der doppelten Größe des Saarlands.

The Raate Frontier Guard Museum

The frontier guard post has been used by soldiers under the reign of three different domains. It served first as a frontier guard for Finns, then for the Russians in the Winter War, and finally, the Germans in the Continuation War.

The building is the oldest guard house in Finland and the only one preserved from the pre-war era. The guard post was built in 1923. The museum building has been restored to its 1930’s appearance. The museum first opened its doors in 3 June 1988.

Vartio on ollut kolmen vallan sotilaiden käytössä. Ensin se oli suomalaisten rajavartioasema, talvisodassa se palveli venäläisiä ja jatkosodassa saksalaisia.

Rakennus on Suomen vanhin vartiorakennus ja ainoa säilynyt ennen sotia rakennettu. Se rakennettiin 1923. Museo on entistetty 1930-luvun vartion kaltaiseksi. Se  avattiin 3.6.1988.
