Travel to Laxey

By tram on the Manx Electric Railway.
Follow the tramlines out of Laxey Station to the main road and its junction with Mines Road. A footpath leads from the road junction down to the Great Laxey Mine Railway, located in the adjacent Valley Gardens. There is easy wheelchair access to the railway but we regret that there is no wheelchair access onto the trains.

By Isle of Man Transport bus, route 3. Alight at the Mines Road stop.

By Car There is ample car parking on Mines Road

Description From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Great Laxey Mine Railway was originally constructed to serve the Isle of Man's Great Laxey Mine, a lead mine located in Laxey. The 19 in (483 mm) gauge railway runs from the old mine entrance to the washing floors along a right of way that passes through the Isle of Man's only remaining railway tunnel under the 3 ft (914 mm) gauge Victorian Manx Electric Railway and the main A2 Douglas to Ramsey coast road.

Restored route

Abandoned in 1929 when the mine closed, the 1⁄4 mi (0.4 km) Great Laxey Mine Railway re-opened in September 2004. Now the Ant and Bee, replicas of the Lewin steam locomotives with the same names originally built in 1877, carry passengers along a restored route once traversed by cars loaded with lead ore pulled by mules.

Great Laxey Mines Railway The narrow gauge railway runs from Laxey's Valley Gardens towards the old adit, not far from the Village's fire station. It follows the route of the original line, which was used to bring ore from the mine to the washing floors. The tunnel under the Ramsey Road is 70 metres long, is very narrow and has limited headroom. Two steam engines "Ant" and "Bee" have been built to recreate the old railway.
