By Rail

Abellio Greater Anglia run regular trains to Harwich between London Liverpool St and Norwich and generally changing trains at Manningtree. You can find public transport information with a route planning facility on the Traveline website.

By Sea

Harwich International Port provides berthing facilities for ferries to the Hook of Holland (Stena Line) and Esbjerg (DFDS) please see their website for further details of services and sailings. Many large international cruises also visit Harwich via this port.

By Road

From the M25 at junction 28 take the A12 signed Chelmsford and Colchester. Just North of Colchester take the A120(E) signed to Harwich. The LV18 is right at the end of the A120. From the Midlands and North, take the A14 signed Felixstowe/Harwich until you can join the A12 signed for London around Ipswich. Join the A12 signposted London until just North of Colchester where you take the A120(E) signed to Harwich. The LV18 is right at the end of the A120.

About the Vessel

After almost two years of restoration the lightship has made its way to its new berth at Halfpenny Pier in Harwich since May 12th, 2011. The last manned Trinity House lightvessel will be open to the public as a museum lightship and major tourist attraction seven days a week in the summer months.

The Lightship has been restored to its original working condition where ever possible.
The crew cabins and mess areas are furnished with many vintage radios and record players.

The LV18 lightvessel

The LV18 is a survivor from the heyday of British shipping. Marriners navigating their way through the dangerous waters around our coast are still protected from running aground by stationary lightships anchored at sea as well as lighthouses on land.
However todays light vessels are all automatic and unmanned. This unique, historic vessel is the only surviving lightship not to have been stripped of its accomodation and it has been restored by a dedicated team of volunteers.
LV18 still contains the original crew quarters, galley, messroom and six Gardner diesel generators to power the lantern, foghorns and ship's equipment.

The Lightship now houses a very interesting collection of vintage radios, which until recently were on display in the Old Light House in Harwich.
The radios in the Lightship, including a display on "Pirate radio", are displayed in the cabins that were occupied by the lightship crew, and also around the other areas of the lightship.
