The museum opened in 1991 in the courtyard wing of a scheduled historic building, in one of fine old streets of the Buda Castle District. The building was once a priory, later the seat of Parliament and the King's Court, and then, after alterations, the seat of the Lieutenancy Council. From the end of the 19th century, it housed the Ministry of the Interior. Space was found here in 1928 for a sub-exchange of the Krisztina Telephone Exchange (the first automatic telephone exchange in the country). This continued to operate until 1985.

The museum was organized around the Rotary 7A1-type sub-exchange, with a crossbar switchboard. Visitors can get acquainted with the 10 year-old history of the Matáv company by visiting the exhibition.

A Telefónia Múzeum (Budapest, I. Országház utca 30.) műemléki környezetben mutatja be több mint 100 év telefonnal kapcsolatos tárgyi emlékeit.

1928-1985 között itt működött a kerület automata telefonközpontja. Kikapcsolása után egyedülálló módon nem bontották le a központot, hanem e köré egy múzeumot rendeztek be. A bejárattal szemben Puskás Tivadar ősi telefonközpontja fogadja a látogatót. A teremben régi telefonok, az eredeti rendező, Kádár János főnök-titkári berendezése és mások vannak ízlésesen elhelyezve. A következő teremben van az említett telefonközpont, amely néhány vonallal ma is működőképes. Az ablakok mellett a kábelezés és légvezetékek bemutatása történik. A harmadik teremben a régi nyilvános készülékek mellett a modernebb nyomógombos telefonok, valamint modern telefonközpont-részegységek találhatók. Itt van az internetbemutató is. A folyosón többek között a Magyarországon született amerikai Pupin Mihály találmánya, a róla elnevezett pupinfazék látható.
