The Defense Museum is housed in a beautiful brick building (Building 62) - an arsenal from 1860 at Akershus Fortress in Oslo.

The Defense Museum is located at Akershus Fortress, a short walk from Karl Johans gate. With public transport to the city center (National Theater, Stortinget, Stortorget, Jernbanetorget or Oslo S) it is about 10-15 minutes quiet walk to the Defense Museum. You will most easily reach the museum via the main gate at the end of Kirkegata. Cars must be parked outside the fortress area and the nearest parking facilities are in Kongensgate.

Alternatively, you can enter the sorting port, and go through the upper fortifications and over the bridge down to the Defense Museum, located at the bottom of the corner of the fortress area.

Forsvarsmuseet ligger på Akershus festning, en kort spasertur fra Karl Johans gate. Med kollektivtransport til Oslo sentrum (Nasjonalteateret, Stortinget, Stortorget, Jernbanetorget eller Oslo S) er det ca 10-15 minutters rolig gange til Forsvarsmuseet. Du kommer lettest inn til museet via hovedporten i enden av Kirkegata. Biler må parkeres utenfor festningsområdet, og de nærmeste parkeringsmulighetene er i Kongensgate.

Alternativt kan du du gå inn sortiporten, og gå gjennom de øvre festningsverkene og over broen ned til Forsvarsmuseet som ligger nederst i hjørnet av festningsområdet.

The main purpose of the museum is to show the Norwegian military history from the Viking Age to the present, and the museum consists of six departments:

  • The ancient times, military history from the Viking era to 1814.
  • 1814-1905, military history from 1814 to 1905.
  • 1905-1940, military history from 1905-1940.
  • 1940, military history from 1940 to 1945, focusing on the land battles of World War II
  • Naval battles, military history from 1940 to 1945, focusing on naval battles of World War II.
  • After the war, military history from 1945 to present.

In addition, there are periods of special exhibitions.

Museets formål er å informere publikum slik at det på historisk grunnlag skal kunne ta standpunkt i forsvarshistoriske spørsmål, og til Forsvarets rolle i dagens situasjon. Forsvarsmuseet er ett av sju museum i organiasjonen Forsvarets museer, underlagt Forsvarets Fellestjenester (FFT). Museet har også det faglige ansvar for flere andre forsvarshistoriske museer, utstillinger og befestninger med bevaringsverdige kanonstillinger og liknede.
