Spitzbergen ist eine zu Norwegen gehörende Inselgruppe im Nordatlantik und Arktischen Ozean. Im norwegischen Sprachgebrauch heißt die Inselgruppe seit dem Spitzbergenvertrag von 1920 Svalbard (deutsch „Kühle Küste“)

Longyearbyen ist der größte Ort und das Verwaltungszentrum der von Norwegen verwalteten Inselgruppe Spitzbergen (norwegisch: Svalbard) im arktischen Eismeer und einer der nördlichsten Orte der Erde. Es liegt auf der gleichnamigen Hauptinsel Spitzbergen.

I 2012 flyttet luftskipsmuseet til nye og spesialbygde lokaler i sjøområdet i Longyearbyen, like nedenfor Universitetssenteret på Svalbard.

The North Pole Expedition Museum tells the story of three airships, departing from Svalbard, and their flights towards the North Pole:
- Wellman with the AMERICA in 1906, 1907 & 1909
- The NORGE in 1926 (Man first time at the North Pole)
- The ITALIA in 1928 and the following search and rescue expeditions
The exhibition consist of the original expedition films, photos, maps, telegrams, stamps and comercials, ship models, newspapers, postcards, drawings, original artifacts, clothes and more.

Museet fokuserer på tre luftskipsekspedisjoner med utgangspunkt fra Svalbard: Walter Wellmans tre mislykkede forsøk med luftskip 1906–10, sist med luftskipet «America» i 1910, Amundsen-Ellsworth-ekspedisjonen i 1926 og Umberto Nobiles ekspedisjon med luftskipet «Italia» i 1928.
