The National Maritime Museum (Dutch: Het Scheepvaartmuseum) is a maritime museum in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Collection

The museum is dedicated to maritime history and contains many artefacts associated with shipping and sailing. The collection contains, among other things, paintings, scale models, weapons and world maps. The paintings depict Dutch naval officers such as Michiel de Ruyter and historical sea battles.

The map collection includes works by 17th-century cartographers Willem Blaeu and his son Joan Blaeu.

Amsterdam replica

Moored outside the museum is a replica of the Amsterdam, an 18th-century ship which sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies. The replica was built in 1985–1990.

The exhibitions of The National Maritime Museum are located in three different wings of the museum: discover them in the North, East, and West wings. A free audio tour gives you more in-depth information and will present the highlights of the museum to you in 60 minutes.

Het Scheepvaartmuseum (voorheen Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum) is een Nederlands museum over de scheepvaart. Het is gevestigd in het gebouw van het voormalige 's Lands Zeemagazijn en bevat de op een na grootste maritieme collectie ter wereld. Het is gespecialiseerd in de maritieme geschiedenis van Nederland.

De collectie

De collectie bevat onder andere schilderijen, scheepsmodellen, wapens en wereldkaarten. De schilderijen tonen onder andere Nederlandse zeeofficieren, zoals Michiel de Ruyter en indrukwekkende historische zeeslagen. De collectie kaarten bevat exemplaren van Willem en Joan Blaeu.

De schepen

Aan de steiger bij het museum liggen twee schepen afgemeerd: het authentieke stoomschip Christiaan Brunings (in 1900 gebouwd als ijsbreker en directieschip van Rijkswaterstaat) en een replica van het VOC-schip Amsterdam uit 1990. In 1985 werd begonnen met de bouw van het VOC-schip op basis van recente opgravingen bij het wrak van het originele schip dat dateert uit 1749. De replica is een onderdeel van het museum, met onder andere enkele ingerichte ruimtes om zo een beeld te geven van het werk en leven op het schip.
