Museum ’t Kromhout is a ship-engine museum where you can see engines in working.

The museum gives a good overview of the technical development of the engines built here (mainly Kromhout engines) in the Kromhout Engine Factory, in Amsterdam, from 1895.
There are also some other very old engines, from Deutz and Van Rennes (1895), which you can see here at work.
Some of the steam engines on display are also part of the history of 't-Kromhout.
The company was founded at the current location around 150 years ago, at the height of the Industrial Revolution. As shipbuilding played a major role in this part of Amsterdam, the display consists mainly of marine engines.
Besides the working engines, there is also a forge, and the interactive displays give lots of information about the history and technology of combustion engines.
Every Tuesday, work is done on the engines, so you can watch the restoration process.

The collection

Kromhout built an amazing number of different types of engine, nearly all of which are on display in our museum. Besides the famous hot-bulb engines, you will see the first four-stroke petrol engine and the two-stroke crude oil engine, up to the later big F240 engines.

Besides marine engines, the company developed its own special models or built them under licence, such as a  “Ramjet” for the Kolibrie helicopter and even a tiny little engine mounted on the front axle of a bike.

Special engines:

A-190, two-stroke with uniflow scavenging.
A ‘flat’ engine from the Kromhout car period, which is built into the chassis of a lorry.
Ramjet engine from the Kolibrie helicopter.
An aeroplane radial engine Genet Major for the Fokker S9 training aircraft from 1939.
The Wingwheel moped.

Museum ’t Kromhout is een scheepsmotorenmuseum waar u de motoren werkend.

In ons museum krijg je een goed overzicht van de technische ontwikkelingen van voornamelijk Kromhout motoren die hier sinds 1895 gebouwd werden in de Amsterdamse Kromhout Motorenfabriek.
Maar ook andere zeer oude motoren van Deutz en Van Rennes (1895) zijn hier werkend te zien.
Enkele opgestelde stoommachines zijn ook deel van de geschiedenis van ‘t-Kromhout.
Het bedrijf is op de huidige locatie zo’n 150 jaar geleden gesticht toen de “Industriële Revolutie” in volle gang was. In dit deel van Amsterdam speelde vooral de scheepsbouw een grote rol en er zijn dan ook voornamelijk scheepsmotoren opgesteld.
Naast de draaiende motoren is er ook een smederij en via de interactieve schermen komt u heel wat te weten over de geschiedenis en de techniek van verbrandingsmotoren.
Elke dinsdag wordt er aan de motoren gesleuteld zodat u het restauratieproces kunt volgen.

De collectie

Kromhout heeft verbazend veel typen motoren gebouwd die bijna allemaal in ons museum te zien zijn. Beroemd zijn de gloeikopmotoren, maar ook zie je in ons museum de eerste viertakt petroleummotor, de tweetakt Ruwe Olie motor  tot en met de latere grote F240 motoren.

Naast scheepsmotoren werden ook bijzondere exemplaren zelf ontwikkeld of in licentie gebouwd zoals een “Ramjet” voor de Kolibri helicopter en zelfs een heel klein motortje gemonteerd op de vooras van een fiets.

De bijzondere motoren:

A-190, tweetakt met langspoeling.
Uit de Kromhout automobiel periode een “platte” motor die in het vrachtwagenchassis is ingebouwd.
Ramjet motor van de Kolibrie helikopter.
Een vliegtuig stermotor Genet Major voor het Fokker  S9 lesvliegtuig uit 1939.
De wingwheel bromfiets.
