The Museumstoomtram Hoorn Medemblik is a heritage railway in the Netherlands. It runs from Hoorn to Medemblik, a distance of about 20km.

The engine whistles and the fireman shovels coal into the firebox. Wooden partitions creak, wheels sing and steam hisses. From the wooden 3rd class seats in your carriage you will experience a story from a different era. Between the historic “Zuiderzee” towns of Hoorn , Medemblik and Enkhuizen steamtrams meander from village to village across the Westfrisian countryside and an old-fashioned steamer with a fantastic saloon-deck sails along the coast of lake IJsselmeer.

Heritage railway

Nowadays the railways is in use as a tourist attraction. The masterpiece in the collection is the former Nederlandse Spoorwegen locomotive 7742 Bello, the Netherlands' only preserved light steam engine. Other steam locomotives in running order include three tramway engines, two of which are enclosed tram engines (steam dummies). The remaining ones are: three industrial engines; a German one which is now being rebuilt as a replica of a Dutch railway shunting engine (of a series of which several also served on steam tramways); and a locomotive of industrial type which served at a steam tram company in Zuid-Holland, still awaiting restoration.

Seven of the nine steam locomotives are official Dutch rail monuments.

NS 7742 and the two enclosed tram engines are in regular use: Bello mainly in the peak season afternoon train, and the two steam dummies mainly in the 10 o' clock train (tue/wed/thursdays during peak season).

Eight steam tram carriages are in regular service, as well as several steam tram goods wagons.

Bello and the three tramway engines originate from the provinces Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland and Limburg. The serviceable steam tram carriages originate from the provinces Friesland, Gelderland, Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland and Zeeland.

The livery and presentation of the cars is as they were in 1926.

De Spannendste Tijdreis begint hier!

De locomotief fluit en de stoker schept kolen op het vuur. Klaar voor vertrek? Een avontuurlijke reis door een andere tijd begint!

Tussen de historische Zuiderzeesteden Hoorn en Medemblik v.v. rijden de stoomtrams van dorp naar dorp over het platteland. Tussen Enkhuizen en Medemblik v.v. vaart het museumschip 'Friesland' over het IJsselmeer. Stap in voor de Spannendste Tijdreis door de Historische Driehoek.

De Museumstoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik vertelt over de geschiedenis van de stoomtram in Nederland. De collectie stoomtramlocomotieven, rijtuigen en wagens wordt gerestaureerd en rijdend gepresenteerd op de 20 km lange lokaalspoorweg tussen Hoorn en Medemblik uit 1887, die compleet met de oorspronkelijke stations bewaard is gebleven.

Locomotieven

De Stoomtram Hoorn – Medemblik beschikt over een belangwekkende collectie historisch stoomtrammaterieel, waaronder twee rijvaardige vierkante stoomtramlocomotieven,
locomotief 8 van de voormalige HTM (gebouwd door Machinefabriek Breda)
en locomotief 18 van de voormalige GSM (gebouwd door Henschel).
Voorts de Verhoop-locomotief LTM 26 en loc NS 7742 'Bello',
afkomstig van de in 1955 opgeheven tramlijn Alkmaar - Bergen - Bergen aan Zee.
Andere rijvaardige stoomlocomotieven zijn de 'La Meuse' loc 5,
en de 'Jung' locomotieven 16 en 30.
In herbouw is loc Neuehoffnungshütte II, type NS 6500, als NS 6513.
Niet rijvaardig is WSM-locomotief 23.
Voorts is diesellok NTM 101, afkomstig van de Nederlandsche Tramweg Maatschappij, sinds het gereedkomen van de restauratie in 2013 beschikbaar gekomen. Voor rangeerwerk is de in oorspronkelijke staat gebrachte NS Sik 288 op het emplacement Hoorn aanwezig.
 

Rijtuigen en wagens

Ook bezit de museumtram een fraaie collectie houten stoomtramrijtuigen, waarvan bedrijfsvaardig de 21 en 22 van de Gooische Stoomtram (GSM), de 370 en 395 van de Rotterdamsche Tramweg Maatschappij (RTM), de AB 6 van de tramlijn Zutphen - Emmerik (ZE; Gelderse Tram), de C 205 van de Friese tram (NTM), rijtuig AB 24 van de Stoomtram-Maatschappij Breskens - Maldeghem (SBM) en rijtuig AB 8 van de Zeeuwsch-Vlaamsche Tramweg-Maatschappij (ZVTM). In restauratie is rijtuig RTM 334.

Verder is nog een flink aantal goederentramwagens gerestaureerd, veelal uit teruggevonden wagenbakken, die na opheffing van trambedrijven nog tientallen jaren als schuurtjes dienstdeden. Dienstvaardig zijn goederenwagens van de NTM (Nederlandsche Tramweg Maatschappij), OG (Oostelijk Groningen), EDS (Drentse tram, zie DSM) en TNHT (Waterlandse tram). In restauratie is veewagen NTM F63.

Het historisch Nederlands stoomtrammaterieel in de verzameling is afkomstig uit 10 van de vroegere 11 provincies, namelijk niet uit Noord-Brabant. (Daarin laten we de naoorlogse provincie Flevoland, waar nooit stoomtrams hebben gereden, buiten beschouwing.) Bedrijfsvaardig Nederlands stoomtrammaterieel is aanwezig uit 9 van de 11 provincies, namelijk nog niet uit Utrecht en Noord-Brabant.

Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen de bovenstaande rijtuigen met een museaal karakter en niet-museale rijtuigen van Oostenrijkse (voorheen ook Zwitserse) oorsprong.
