Auckland is a city in the North Island of New Zealand. Auckland lies between the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean to the east, the low Hunua Ranges to the south-east, the Manukau Harbour to the south-west, and the Waitakere Ranges and smaller ranges to the west and north-west MOTAT is located close to the Western Springs Stadium, Auckland Zoo and the Western Springs Park. You can experience the MOTAT magic over two great sites at MOTAT Great North Road or MOTAT Meola Road. The multi-award winning Aviation Display Hall is located at MOTAT Meola Road. You can start your experience at either with each site accessible by car, taxi and public transport. Included as part of standard MOTAT admission, the Western Springs Tram service is a fantastic way to experience a historical tram ride between the two sites and passes the idyllic Western Springs Park and Auckland Zoo. | Description | MOTAT, Auckland's Museum of Transport and Technology, is New Zealand's largest transport, technology and social history museum. Collection Themes Aviation The Collection includes the only Solent Mark IV Flying Boat left in the World and a rare World War 2 era Avro Lancaster Bomber. Visitors will also be able to see aircraft which saw service with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Communications Telephones, cameras and everything in between. Emergency Fire trucks, ambulances and emergency memorabilia, experience emergency at MOTAT! The Emergency Collection includes some of the first New Zealand fire-fighting technology, vehicles, and uniforms from various regions of New Zealand. Due to the country's rugged landscape, there is a variety of vehicles on show from the Collection each with their own unique purpose and history which tell stories of kiwi ingenuity in rescue and fire-fighting in New Zealand. Steam MOTAT’s Steam Collection takes visitors back in time to view the importance of steam, diesel and petrol powered objects and how they were essential to the construction and development of much of Auckland City and New Zealand. The Collection contains a number of different engines and several pumps, boilers and other engineering parts and features a key object of the MOTAT collection, the Pumphouse. Under the direction of qualified engineers, visitors can see the Beam Engine in action and experience the inner workings of this magnificent engineering marvel. Historic Village The MOTAT Historic Village Collection is a diverse selection of objects that demonstrate how we use technology in our daily life. Included in this collection are domestic appliances, utensils, textiles, tools, personal items and toys from the Victorian period onwards. Availability of electricity to urban areas in the 1920s made possible the use of electric stoves, washing machines and other electrical appliances. Road Transport The MOTAT Road Collection highlights the development of New Zealand’s road transport, from the horse-drawn cart to the modern car. The extensive road collection includes over 100 motor cars, horse-drawn vehicles, road building vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles, commercial vehicles and various other items such as cutaway engines, tools, petrol pumps and car parts. Tramways At MOTAT, take a ride on working trams that originally operated in New Zealand and Australian cities between the two sites. |
