Zabrze (German: 1915–1945: Hindenburg O.S., full form: Hindenburg in Oberschlesien, 1905–1915: Zabrze, Silesian: Zobrze) is a city in Silesia in southern Poland, near Katowice. The west district of the Silesian Metropolis

The Guido mine, Polish: Zabytkowa Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego is a historic deep coal mine and museum in Zabrze, Silesia, Poland. The museum is an Anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Description The first structure striking tourists visiting “Guido’ mine is the "Railway” shaft hoisting tower, built in 1931. This steel, riveted tower, up to 1888 was of wooden construction. The “Railway” shaft (diameter of 4m) is equipped with a “Berlin” hoisting machine from 1927 (with a 560kW DC motor), which transports visitors to the levels of 170m and 320m below the ground. It is worth noting that this is still the original machine from 1927, subject to ongoing maintenance only. The “Guido” mine visitors descend into the ground with a speed of 4 m/s in the original mining cage, mounted on 980 meters long steel ropes with a diameter of 46mm. Each cage consist of three floors. Each floor accommodates up to 25 people. Slower than in active mines, but fast enough and in such an interesting environment, that the journey in the undergrounds itself is the unforgettable experience.

In front of the “Kolejowy” shaft entrance door there is the rope wheel (diameter of 5m) from Makoszowy mine shaft, it is also possible to see the train used for underground transport of miners, compressors, pumps, mining carts with liquid nitrogen, and many other items related to coal mining industry.

Guido Mine and Coal Mining Museum History

The Guido mine was set up in 1855 by Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck (1830-1916) to provide coal for the Donnersmarck mills. Maximum production was in 1885 when 312 976 tonnes of coal were cut. When the coal was worked out it continued to draw water from adjacent mines. This function declined in the 1930s and the mine closed in 1960. In 1967 the colliery it reopen as a test mine for colliery machines. It 1987 the site was given listed status. Shortly before, in 1982, an open-air museum had been set up on the surface site: that closed in 1996. The current visitor mine museum opened to 170m in 2007 and to the full 320m in 2008.

Museum

The underground museum is 320m beneath the surface, with a second level representing a 19th-century mine at 170m. 320m makes it the deepest visitor mine in Europe. It exploits the black coal vein of No.620 coal seam It has on display an Alpina tunnelling machine, AM 50 longwall cutter-loader. the 250 tonnes coal containers, the conveyor belts and the suspended railway. It has simulations of mining disasters, and a concert hall. There is also an exhibition dedicated to the Politically Repressed Soldier-Miners of the 1950s, youngsters forced to work underground instead of doing military service.

Description
(other)
