Central Railway Museum
This is undoubtedly the country's best museum concerned with railways and charts the complete development of railways in Russia and the former USSR, from the very first Russian steam locomotive, built by the father and son Cherepanov team, to the modern railways and engines of today. The museum boasts some incredibly detailed models, most notably one of a cargo station with railway cars going up and down a hill.
In 2001 a part of the Exposition moved to Warsaw railway station in Sankt Petersburg
The Railway Museum also owns a collection of old locomotives and cars, which is displayed at a separate location, just outside St. Petersburg (from the Vitebsk Railway Station take a local train to Parovozny Muzei).
The Central Museum of Railway Transport of Russia
The Central Museum of Railway Transport of Russia is situated in St.Petersburg University of construction and means of communications. The Museum is housed in the building, which was specially built for it in 1902.
Nowadays the Museum collections reflect the history of all components of railway transport: locomotives and carriages; communication, automation and means structures. There are unique models of steam engines, carriages, bridges, some of them being displayed at the international exhibitions in the XIX and beginning of the XX century, in particular in construction in Russia and the former USSR and about the formation and development of railway technology.
The Museum's materials are widely used by historians, researchers, fans, film and TV studios.
Education is one of the most important trends in the Museum work. Young people and students make about 70% of the visitors. They visit the Museum to make acquaintence with the laws of physics, chemistry and mechanics; to choose a profession, a place of future studies. The Club of Railway History and Engineering work under the auspices of the Museum. Meetings and temporary exhibitions enlarge the number of the Museum's visitors.
Our Museum is the scientific and methodological centre in the work with minor museums of railway transport and enterprises of the Minisry of Railways of Russia, half of them being visited by our museum stuff. The Museum assists them in methodology of exhibition set up, historical materials, we conduct consultations and work on creating the data bank of railway science and engineering monuments preserved on the Russian railway network.
The Museum lacks exhibition areas. Only 3% of the Museum's funds are on display. In order to enlarge their exhibition and to mark historical events, the Museum organizes up to 16 temporary exhibitions per year in schools, colleges, at the railways of Russia and abroad. The Museum has a branch of "Russian bridgebuilding" and there is a site with authentic locomotives.

Центральный музей железнодорожного транспорта России находится в городе Санкт-Петербурге, основан в 1813 году при институте, который готовил специалистов в области строительного искусства и путей сообщения. Музей расположен в здании, построенном специально для него в 1902 г.
В настоящее время коллекции музея отражают историю всех составляющих железнодорожного транспорта: локомотивы и вагоны; связь; автоматику и средства управления; строительные и дорожные (путевые) машины; мосты и другие искусственные сооружения. Основная экспозиция музея, наряду с подлинными предметами техники, содержит уникальные модели паровозов, вагонов, мостов… Некоторые из них демонстрировались (экспонировались) на международных выставках в XIX – начале XX веков, в частности, в 1900г. в Париже. Богатейший фотофонд музея рассказывает о методах строительства железных дорог в России и бывшем СССР, о становлении и развитии железнодорожной техники.
Материалы музея широко используют историки, исследователи, любители, кино- и телестудии.
Одно из важнейших направлений в работе музея – массово-воспитательная и учебная работа. Около 70% посетителей – это учащиеся и молодежь. Они посещают музей по учебным программам, с целью расширения своих знаний; знакомства с практическим применением законов физики, химии, механики на практике; с целью профориентации, выбора профессии, места дальнейшей учебы. При музее работают: клуб любителей; семинар по профессиям; исторический лекторий; детская изостудия. Постоянные встречи по интересам и временные выставки увеличивают число посетителей музея.
В музее недостаточно экспозиционных площадей. Только около 3% фондовых материалов находится в постоянной экспозиции, чтобы увеличить их показ и отмечая исторические события, музей организует до 16 временных выставок в год, как в основном здании, так и в школах, институтах, с выездом на железные дороги страны, а также и за границы России. Музей имеет филиал "Отечественное моторостроение" и площадку под открытым небом с натурной техникой. |
