The museum is located on the territory of the Sverdlovsk Railway.
It consists of the Old Yekaterinburg Station building at the city center (Uralskaya metro station) at the Yekaterinburg-Sortirovochny station on the north-west outskirts of Yekaternburg.

Museum of Sverdlovsk Railway

The first museum of history of Sverdlovsk Railway was opened in the 1970s. The exposition worked only for railwaymen. Entry for outsiders was carried out by appoinment. The museum was opened for general consumption in the Old Station building in 2003, which was built in 1878 according the project of architect Pyotr Shreyber. Restoration of the building was dated for celebrating 125th anniversary of Svrdlovsk railway. The entrance is decorated with the bronze sculptures of travellers and railwaymen. Near the entrance are also trucks of a freight carrige, semaphore and lifting gate.

Permanent exposition includes: information boards about famous Sverdlovsk railwaymen, model railroad, workplace tools, historical photographs, signaling arrangements, model trains (include the first Russian Cherepanov's steam locomotive), overhead structures, uniform, model railroad at the Revda and Verkh-Neyvinsky stations. The exhibition covers the period from emergence of rail transport in the region up to the present moment. The exposition presents VL11 driver's desk, workplace of the station attendant in the early 1950s and the ticket teller.

Historical rolling stock (13 locomotives and carriages) is exhibited at the display area at Yekaterinburg-Sortirovochny station. The total length of the exhibition tracks is 300 m.

Екатеринбургский музей железнодорожного транспорта — выставка под открытым небом на станции Екатеринбург-Сортировочный. Экспонатами являются локомотивы-памятники (электровозы, паровоз серии ФД), старинные вагоны и ремонтная мотриса ДМС. В коллекцию входят такие раритеты, как ВЛ19-035, ВЛ22-171, "Сурамские" электровозы Сс и СК, Паровоз Л, тепловоз ТЭ3. Здесь также находится единственный построенный опытный пассажирский электровоз ПБ21-01.

Создается новый музей натурных образцов Свердловской железной дороги на территории бывших ремонтных цехов локомотивного депо Свердловск-Пассажирский.
Туда, в экспозицию, в те самые цеха, под крышу, будут перемещены выше описанные локомотивы, а также исторические и прочие, рядом стоящие, вагоны. Также немало техники будет привезено из разных мест (депо, баз запаса и пр.) Свердловской и других железных дорог; также в коллекцию музея с других дорог уже передаются некоторые исторически ценные локомотивы, вагоны и прочее. Например, недавно с Московской железной дороги прибыл раритетный электровоз ВЛ23-069, которому грозила порезка в чермет; при открытии музея он должен занять место в экспозиции рядом с его предшественниками Сс, СК, ВЛ19, ВЛ22, ВЛ22м и ПБ21.
