| Description | Porjus is known for having one of the oldest hydropower plants in Sweden (Porjus kraftverk - Porjus hydroelectric power station), built 1910-1915. The power plant was built to deliver electricity to the building of the railroad between Luleå and Narvik, where the mining industry shipped iron ore.
Today, Porjus is a living village and the old power plant is a popular tourist attraction among many others. Falls Day always comes on the first Sunday in July and sees much activity and festivities in Porjus. The dam opens two times during the day. Take the opportunity to make a visit to Porjus old powerhouse that offers guided tours through the Lule River history. It gives you the opportunity to go down underground and see the old machine hall with its machines. Experience the old power plant with the machine hall and control room from 1915. |

Samhället kom till i början av 1900-talet i samband med att Porjus kraftverk byggdes här i Stora Luleälv, vid utloppet av Stora Lulevatten åren 1910-1915. Åren 1971-1982 byggdes den nya kraftstationen.
Ställverksbyggnaden vid Porjus gamla kraftstation blev byggnadsminnesmärkt 1986 och var då ett av de första byggnadsminnena med anknytning till 1900-talets industrialisering. Den gamla kraftstationen, invigd 8 februari 1915, är idag museum. |
