Description | Museum Lobby - Welcome to the Bradbury Science MuseumIn 1942, the Laboratory began as the site for designing the first atomic bomb. Today it is one of the world's largest multidisciplinary research institutions. Begin your visit in the Lobby with an overview of what the Laboratory is today and its vital role in the economy and quality of life in the northern New Mexico community. Defense Gallery - Strengthening global securityThe central mission of the Laboratory is to ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent while reducing the global threat of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. As part of that mission, the Laboratory provides the necessary expertise and technology developed here to help the nation respond effectively to significant threats of broad scope and to help make the world a safer place. Research Gallery - Science serving societyThe Laboratory conducts leading-edge research in many areas of science and technology to help solve national problems related to energy, the environment, infrastructure, and health. Basic research conducted here enhances national defense and economic security. HISTORY GALLERY - The Atomic Age beginsThe conflict that darkened Europe in the late 1930s at first cast no shadow here on the sunny Pajarito Plateau, but soon World War II shook the entire world. Los Alamos, once the site of a boys’ ranch school, became the focus of the secret project to develop a new weapon, one that derived its power from splitting the atom.
