Description

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is an historical maritime museum in Detroit, Michigan. Located on The Strand on Belle Isle Park along the Detroit River, this museum places special interest on Detroit's role on national and regional maritime history. The 16,000-square-foot (1,500 m2) museum features exhibits such as one of the largest collections of model ships in the world, and the bow anchor of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which went down in a storm in 1975.

Permanent exhibits

Built by the River
In the John A. and Marlene L. Boll Foundation Gallery

Detroit’s growth and development into one of the nation’s leading metropolitan regions is undeniably linked to the river that shares its name. The Dossin Great Lakes Museum’s new core exhibition — Built by the River — highlights the ways in which Detroiters have long used the river and lakes around us to build our industries, engage our neighbors and pursue our recreational passions.

Miss Pepsi,
the fastest hydroplane in the Detroit River in its time, was perhaps the most famous symbol of a family that made their livelihood distributing nationally famous soft drinks to Detroiters and residents of the region. The company was Dossin’s Food Products.

Outdoor Treasures
Explore a collection of maritime artifacts on the shores of Belle Isle, including the bow anchor of the legendary Edmund Fitzgerald, naval cannons from the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812, a nautical flag pole and an anchor from the USS Yantic.

Watch the river from our new observation telescope and relax on the landscaped river walk.

William Clay Ford Pilot House
The S.S. William Clay Ford, a Great Lakes freighter, was scrapped in 1987 and its pilot house was brought to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum.

The S.S. William Clay Ford provided years of reliable service transporting iron ore and coal from the upper Great Lakes to the River Rouge Steel Plant, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company. Built in 1953 at the Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Michigan, as a 647-foot straight-decked vessel, the S.S. William Clay Ford was lengthened to 767 feet in 1979. Despite this change, the vessel still could not compete in the transportation industry because freighter size and technology kept advancing. Rouge Steel replaced it with two self-unloading vessels that had the capacity to unload their cargo through a series of shipboard belts and booms at any lake port.

The Gothic Room
in the Polk Family Hall is the first exhibit you enter when coming into the Dossin Great Lakes Museum.  Stepping through its doors is like stepping back in time inside the reconstructed gentleman’s lounge of the City of Detroit III, with a window on the right side of the gallery set up as if you’re looking out at the Detroit shore line in the early 1900s.
