Description | Preserving the Heritage of Gallatin County & Southwest MontanaCrutches, Cavities, and CuresAn exhibit on health care in the Gallatin Valley"Crutches, Cavities, and Cures" displays items from a bygone era when doctors carried a black bag and nurses wore either a "short" or "long" cap emblazoned with a red cross. Visitors will be able to view an early nurse's uniform, antique wheel chair and dentist chair, bedpans, potions, needles, pharmaceuticals, and instruments. More Music on the BalconyHarmonicas, a violin, euphonium, metronome, and even an old Philco radio, give visitors a greater appreciation of the pre-digital age of entertainment. Music books, sheet music, and an old phonograph, help round out the display.Continuing ExhibitsLocated in what was the county jail, visitors can view a timeline history of Gallatin County. The 1911 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a few of the original cells are still intact, as well as the gallows, to give a glimpse of the history of law enforcement in the county. The American Indian exhibit reveals the great talents and craftsmanship held by these early residents of Montana. Maps illustrate the Indian territories and also the migration of mountain men and settlers into the area. Daily life of early settlement is displayed in an authentic 1870s log cabin. The agricultural room features early farm and ranch tools. Military history is illustrated in a model of Fort Ellis, the Big Horn gun and an extensive gun collection. Highlighted are the Sweet Pea Festival and a woman’s parlor. Smaller communities in the county are featured all the way to Yellowstone Park. Accenting the artifacts and text are vintage photographs that help tell the stories of the people and places of Gallatin County. |
