The Grand Canyon Railway (reporting mark GCRX), is a passenger railroad which operates between Williams, Arizona, and Grand Canyon National Park South Rim.

Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, provides daily service to Williams, operating its Southwest Chief between Chicago and Los Angeles. Rail passengers arrive and depart at Williams Junction, 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Williams, and are shuttled by Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach from Williams Junction to the Grand Canyon Railway in downtown Williams.

The downtown station also serves as the southern terminus for the Grand Canyon Railway.

Williams has a small General Aviation airport, H.A. Clark Memorial Field serving small aircraft.
Description

WILLIAMS DEPOT
Grand Canyon Railway departs each day from the historic Williams Depot, located at the south end of the rail line. Built in 1908 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, the depot was an oasis for travelers heading to and from California along the main line running from Los Angeles to Chicago. It was home to one the Harvey House Hotels, which had 43 rooms, as well as a formal dining room, cafe, bar and a news room.

Today, the depot is where passengers of Grand Canyon Railway pick up their tickets. There is also an expansive gift shop in the depot full of Grand Canyon Railway and Grand Canyon mementos. The oldest poured-concrete structure in the state of Arizona, the Williams Depot and the original Fray Marcos Hotel are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Train Equipment

The Grand Canyon Railway Diesel Fleet

Today, Grand Canyon Railway is home to a remarkable collection of America’s famed diesel locomotives.

Our primary movers are 3 EMD F-40PH diesel locomotives, acquired in February 2003. General Motors Electro Motive Division built Nos. 237 and 239 in 1977 and No. 295 in 1979. Amtrak used the engines through the late 1990s. These engines have been fully refurbished and modernized, and have been in service with GCR since 2004.

Additionally, Grand Canyon Railway has retained the original diesel locomotives, in service from 1990 – 2009. Engines No. 6773, No. 6793, No. 6776 and B-Units No. 6871 and No. 6860 are all FPA-4, and built by ALCO (American Locomotive Company) in 1959.
Currently, only No. 6793 and B-unit No. 6880 have been painted in the GCR silver and gold livery and see limited service on the Williams Flyer to Grand Canyon National Park.
No. 6776 was re-painted silver and gold and placed on static display at Grand Canyon Depot in 2016.

Another member of the diesel fleet is a GP-7 model, No. 1105. Used primarily for moving equipment around the Williams Locomotive Yard, No. 1105 can also be seen pulling the annual Pumpkin Patch Train every October.

Steam Reinstated

As a result of popular demand, Grand Canyon Railway reinstates limited steam operations at the Williams Depot. After converting locomotive No. 4960 to run purely on waste vegetable oil (WVO), the Railway begins conducting steam trips on its special event train dubbed the "Cataract Creek Rambler".
