Leadville is a former silver mining town that lies amongst the headwaters of the Arkansas River in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the Leadville Historic District contains many historic structures and sites in its dynamic mining era. In the late 19th century, Leadville was the second most populous city in Colorado, after Denver. Leadville is notable for having a large number of 14,000 foot peaks viewable from town. Its western terminus is located just 32 miles (51 km) north of Leadville. Major exhibits include an elaborate model railroad, a walk-through replica of an underground hardrock mine, the Gold Rush room, with many specimens of native gold, a large collection of mineral specimes, a mining art gallery and a gift shop. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum is a federally chartered memorial for men and women who have achieved lasting greatness in the mining industry and related fields. Through three levels of exhibits, you will be immersed in the story of mining. Wander through replicas of caves and mines to learn about coal, gold, and other extrodinary gems and minerals found by geologists and miners around the world. Visit the fourth level terrace for an awe-inspiring view of the Rockies from the highest point in Leadville. The Mining Hall of Fame is located on the fifth level of the building where you can read about the industrious men and women who changed the mining world. |
