The Campo Railroad Park & Museum is a railroad museum in California located in Campo, on the San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway line. The museum also owns and manages a railroad depot located in La Mesa. The Museum’s main facility is located in Campo, California, a pleasant fifty-mile drive east of downtown San Diego. From Interstate 8: 1) Exit at exit number 51 for Buckman Springs Road (about 30 minutes East of San Diego or 60 minutes West of El Centro) 2) Head southwest on Buckman Springs Road and continue for about 10 miles 3) Turn right onto State Highway 94 where Buckman Springs Road ends and continue for about 1.5 miles 4) After passing over the railroad tracks, turn left onto Forrest Gate Road and follow the signs into the museum |
Description | From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The museum also has approximately 100 historic railroad cars and locomotives on display, including five steam locomotives, seventeen diesel locomotives and many other pieces of rolling stock. A large display building houses part of the railroad equipment collection which allows visitors to view or walk through the equipment. A new donation has been received for an exhibit titled "Signal Science" which uses retired railroad signals to demonstrate how railway signals work. The museum is also home to the Southwest Railway Library, which opened in Campo on July 2014. The library contains the second largest collection of railroad history in California. Round trip train ride on the historic San Diego & Arizona Railway The Golden State is the Museum’s classic weekend excursion that has been in operation since 1986. You will depart from the Campo Depot for the approximately 45-minute ride after visiting the Museum’s gift shop and ticket office. Passengers aboard the Golden State enjoy the rugged back-country scenery of San Diego County as the train travels toward the Mexican border. The train then returns to Campo where passengers may detrain at either the Museum’s equipment display grounds or back at the Campo Depot. The Golden State is also available for the general public and weekday group charters on selected Tuesdays. A minimum passenger count is required for these weekday trips and advance reservations ARE required. Want to ride in the cab of the locomotive? Cab rides are available during our regularly scheduled Golden State trains. For more information, please visit the LOCOMOTIVE CAB RIDES page. |
