Description

Spend the Day

Spend a fun filled day discovering 35-acres of Maine history brought to life! Step back in time for a peek at Maine and the way life used to be.
Nowhere else in New England can you ride the rails behind an authentic steam locomotive surrounded by historic Maine buildings preserved in a recreated village of aged and vintage buildings assembled from across Maine, and view a collection of 60 antique autos or experience model trains as never before.

The museum has over three-quarters of a mile of two foot gauge track. Having three steam locomotives available for service along with vintage and replications of Maine narrow gauge rolling stock makes for an authentic experience of railroad history.

Offering the opportunity to ride through our village and visit an authentic station lobby of one of our two historic Maine railroad stations is only a part of your visit to the museum. Also there is an extensive photographic and artifactual exhibit of the history of Maine two-footers.

In addition to re-creating Maine's narrow gauge historical steam trains, the museum offers rural village exhibits in a variety of historic buildings and an exceptional antique vehicle exhibit.

Antique Automobile Museum

The Museum’s Antique Automobile Exhibit has more than 60 vehicles on display. The automobiles and trucks on view date from 1902 – 1962 and illustrate technological advances and engineering fetes that helped make cars accessible to the masses. Our collection also includes vintage gas pumps, oil cans, service manuals, and other automotive ephemera.

Model Railroad

The Model Railroad Exhibit, housed since July 2019 in the Ronald E Spinney Building at the Railway Village, is under constant construction, portraying railroading in Maine during the 1950s—1960s. The current HO scale layout has been evolving since the fall of 2006 and will take several more years to complete at the current pace.

Historic Structures

The Railway Village Museum is comprised of historically significant structures that were transported to the property from their original locations across the state of Maine. Many of the structures were specifically from the mid-coast region. In addition to these structures offering their own rich history, most also house the museum's exhibits of historic artifacts.

Grover's Hardware Collection

Contains tools and household items commonly sold in hardware stores at the turn of the century. Our museum hardware store is named after local Grover's Hardware in Boothbay Harbor, ME.

Salt and Pepper Shakers

The museum's quirky collection of mid-century salt and pepper shakers includes approximately 600 unique shakers.

Toy Shop Collection

The Railway Village Museum has a sizable collection of vintage toys and children's books dating from the early to mid 1900s. From handmade items to iconic firsts, select items can be found on display at the museum.

Woodshop Collection

This pristine collection of vintage woodworking tools was donated by seasonal Boothbay Harbor resident, Chuck Koch. These hand tools range in date from the late 1800s to mid 1900s.
