Very early reflex klystron designed by Robert Sutton of the Signal School group at Bristol University. 10E/501 was intended as local oscillator in airborne microwave radar sets, matched with the frequency of the CV38 magnetron.Starting from the late 1941 it was replaced by the improved CV67. It had a post-mortem registration as CV11.
Sutton oscillators also include the NR89, the frequency variant suitable for use with the NT98 magnetron.
Sutton oscillators are characterized by the deep drawn copper discs connected to the external resonating cavity and terminating in the horn-shaped interaction gap. The reflector is cup-shaped, likely to keep the electron beam focused.
Sutton tubes, 10E/501, NR89 and the derived Canadian REL Type 8, were the only reflex klystrons available as local oscillator in 10-cm radar receivers until the late 1941.
