Description |
Very few information on this Canadian klystron. Sibley lists four frequency variants from 8A to 8D. The shape of the two deep-drawn cavities, their terminating horns, the diameter of the inter-gap holes in the order of 5 mm and the cup-shaped reglector, suggest that it was directly derived from the original British 'Sutton tube' as in the draft at page 79 of Metres to Microwaves, Callick. The use of a similar electrode structure, even with the electron gun with two focusing grids, leads us to date the design of this family around the mid 1941. Around that date the British 'Sutton tube' was the only device that could be used as local oscillator in 10-cm radar receivers. REL had to build some 660 units of GL-IIIC underl the 'Lend and Lease Act' and the Western Electric oscillator specified in the preliminary specs (the 707A) was not yet ready.
The klystron Type 8 looks likely designed with a view for volume productions of 10-cm sets. Starting from the NR89 British 'Sutton oscillator', this tube was strenghtened by adding an aluminum can with a 4-pin bayonet base. The always critical tuner was modified with a large knurled tuning stub, factory pre.tuned. Four frequency variants, A to D, based upon the frequency of corresponding magnetrons. REL 8B in the images on the right matches the E1189 / REL 3D magnetron.
Manufactured by Rogers for REL.
