This tube was made by the de Forest company at the new works at High Bridge in The Bronx, New York City. De Forest hired Robert F. McGowan as chief engineer and in this role, he supervised development of various new tubes as well as the manufacture of some tubes formerly made by H. W. McCandless & Co. This tube's appearance was that of a conventional twin element Audion but it had glass arbors to help protect the anode and grid from damage due to rough handling. It had two tantalum filaments with the lead for the second filament insulated from the brass base with the usual stout rubber band. It was to the basis of the first tubes made by Western Electric.
