Description |
In 1920, Westinghouse had decided to make a dry cell tube that ran on a single 1.5 volt battery. Due to battery drain, they decided that 1.1 volts should be the rated filament voltage.
The research department created a list of tubes, numbered T1 to T99, each with different construction. By mid 1921, testing had shown that T88 was the most promising - 35 initial samples were made for test purposes.
Unsure that the Westinghouse factory could produce the tube, 500 initial tubes were ordered to be made - it is estimated that 300 were actually made. Following the successful test run, the WD-11 went into full commercial production.
