Description

The tube like devices made by the St James Laboratories appear to look externally like regular tubes but are quite different. They consist of an evacuated glass bulb mounted in a socket similar to a regular type and the 4 wires are each connected to a nut and bolt in the base. Origianlly there were 4 tubes in the series, having a red painted section of the top of the bulb. These appear to have been made before 1925 and have no type numbers. The tube had a green cotton winding covering. A smaller tube was introduced in 1926, which was not evacuated. This tube had a beige colored winding. They are used as IF transformers and were advertised as the St James Intermediate Vacuum Transformer..

The Superhetrodyne radio made by the company has four transformers in the output stages. The tube type is identified mainly as Two-Forty or 2-40. It was advertised several times in the Radio Citizens Call Book but not all ads are known. The set of 4 transformers was available fot US$ 30 .
